There must be an infinite number of possible thoughts on any one piece of art, but we will only cover seven, a weeks worth. For 52 weeks, through 2009, you will see a work of art from the Portland Art Museum* and a riff each day inspired by it – prose, poetry, photos, video, thoughts or ponderings.

David Salle ~ A View of the Artist
Here are two views of David Salle, the artist of the week. The one on the left is of Salle just this year in his studio in Sagaponack, NY. He appears just as lithe now as he did in 1986 when the photo on the right was taken. Prior to moving to the outer reaches of Long Island, Salle lived in TriBeCa. He sold that housing and then renovated 81 Hanson Place in the Fort Greene section of Brooklyn so that he could have both a country and city presence. Below are photos of his Sagaponack and Brooklyn digs. They both have a very modern, sleek look that seems to reflect this artist who has been dubbed a neo-Expressionist.
Just in case you're wandering the streets of Fort Greene in Brooklyn or the Chelsea gallery area in Manhattan, I'm including another shot of Salle. This one was taken in 2006. Salle was attending a Metropolitan Opera gathering that inaugurated a new contemporary-art gallery within the Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center. Salle is standing with Dodie Kazanjian, editor at large for Vogue, in front of one of his paintings.
